A Healthy Alternative
Although it is not something I would generally do, there are more and more people heading to Las Vegas these days and enjoying a healthy holiday. Where I normally crawl out of bed at the crack of noon and start my day with a nice baileys and coffee. There are those that go to Las Vegas, rise at the crack of dawn and enjoy a nice morning jog.
In fact, if you are one of the few who enjoy a nice endorphemine rush before noon, Las Vegas has lots to offer. Believe it or not, the Las Vegas Strip is actually a famous running loop as well.
Here is list of runs that are available to people staying on the strip. These were originally published in Runners’s World.
The Strip (7.3 miles): From the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Mandalay Bay Road run north on the sidewalk along Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as the Strip. Follow the Strip past Las Vegas's most famous hotels and casinos. Turn around at the Sahara Hotel and Casino on East Sahara Avenue and return to the start.
Sunset Park (3.3 miles): Start at Sunset Park Pond. Run the one-mile trail clockwise around the pond. Head east on Sunset Park Road. Follow it as it loops through the park. Pass two large parking lots. Turn right on South Eastern Avenue. Turn right on East Sunset Road. Turn right on Sunset Park Road and return to the start.
Scenic Drive (14.8 miles): Scenic Drive loops around Red Rock Canyon. The road is paved and marked every mile. From the Visitor Center take Scenic Drive north. Steep grades make the first five miles a challenge. Catch your breath at High Point Overlook. When Scenic Drive ends, turn left on Route 159 and return to the start.
By the way Zappos.com Las Vegas Marathon will be held Dec.2 2007
If running is not your thing for a mere $15-20 you can try out your hotel’s gym facilities. All of the major hotels on the strip have a gym available for their guests, but if yours doesn’t there is a massive 24-hour club — the Las Vegas Sporting House — just off the strip that sells daily passes.
