Are discount hotels worth the hassle?

It seems like every other day I am hearing about this great hotel, it’s just a block or so off the strip and you can book it for $10 a night. Sounds amazing but are these discount hotels really all they are cracked up to be? Can they really be this cheap?
How much money do you really save?
I know when I go to Las Vegas I always try to get the best hotel rates I can. After all, I figure the more I save on my room the more I can spend on Vegas attractions such as gambling, restaurants and shows. Besides, the only time you will catch me in my room is for sleeping.
But, despite the cheap initial costs, am I really saving any money?
One of the great things about Las Vegas is the fact that they love to reward their good customers. It has become common practice amongst the nicer hotels to entice customers with comps. Without getting into another complete post on comps just be aware that if you are there to spend money Las Vegas is willing to GIVE you a room.
So just be careful when booking a cheap hotel, you may not be saving any money at all.
How much is your time worth?
Another common misconception is that commuting time is meaningless when you are on vacation. I would argue that this is completely wrong. In fact, since I am on a set time the last thing I want to do is waste any of it commuting to where I want to be.
Las Vegas is not small and a few miles off the Strip can easily burn an hour of your time if you are travelling at rush hour.
What about convenience?
Let’s face it, we do things on vacation that we don’t get a chance to do during our regular 9-5 existence. I like being served. I like to have everything I could possibly need in one spot, such as, restaurants, spas and entertainment.
Las Vegas’ hotels are so mammoth that you could easily spend your entire holiday in just one. And we love them for it.
What type of vacation do you want?
I guess this is the question you need to ask yourself before you go to Sin City. I am not suggesting that you just blindly book a hotel regardless of price. What I am suggesting is Las Vegas vacations are so much more than just the price. If you are going to save a measly $100 and be in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no amenities around, you better make sure this is what you want out of your trip.
In the mean time, keep up to date on the rates at the premium hotels.
